If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.
-Anne Bradstreet
There is cold, and then there is cold, Winter becoming wintry day by day. We witness temperatures varying from chilly to frighteningly freezing, some day it’s clear and lovely other day there is snowstorm. While yes, winters are very cold- to the point where you can’t feel your fingers and toes, but there are many good things that we can learn only during winter.
Take a break
That’s what winter is: an exercise in remembering how to still yourself then how to come pliantly back to life again.
-Ali Smith
We make ourselves busy in execution every day. We work tirelessly to achieve the never-ending results. You would argue- it is important. I would say- yes, it is, but then I ask you- Is it everything?
You can argue again and we can carry on our debate tirelessly to score more against each other without giving ourselves break, and that’s precisely my point. We become so much busy in achieving something that often times we forget to take much needed break.
Sometimes, sitting still, enjoying your favorite show, having mouth-watering meal and spending time with loved ones can do miracles and you achieve what you were not while you were busy in doing things.
Let me tell you my experience about why breaks are important in life-
We had one major issue in our project and we were at dead end, everyone in the team tried almost everything but one. And, yes, we didn’t try to sit still, we didn’t take break. Then there came suggestion from our lead let’s take break. Everyone was like how can he say that? But then we took a coffee/tea break. We discussed everything during our break but the issue. Once we were back, it was surprising that it took hardly 5 minutes for one of team member to find the solution. The lessons learnt were two
· Why other person was lead- because he knew what his team was missing. That’ break
· Why breaks are important.
So let’s appreciate winter for giving us much needed break in our life to teach us lesson of life.
Love
I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.
-Lewis Carroll
What do we do for person we love?
Though it is profound question with no easy answer, but one simple answer could be- we would care for them and protect them from adversity.
And this is what we can learn from Nature during winter i.e. to stand by our loved ones, protect them, support them, and love them, whenever they need our moral boost. And soon you will see them out of their adversity. Additionally, you will see your relationship becoming more cheerful and colorful like springs.
So, let’s appreciate winter for teaching us wonderful lesson of love i.e during times of despair, worry or stress we must stand by our loved ones and protect them. Your warmth will definitely act as “summer in winter” for them.

Flexibility
As I said in introduction, some days in winter are clear and lovely while others are bone chilling cold.
Similarly, we have happy days and then bad days, but are we balanced between them or more precisely are we flexible enough to handle both situations gravely as the nature do?
If not, this is very good lesson we can learn from winter and nature i.e be ready for all kinds of situations – be flexible.
Friendship
My old grandmother always used to say, Summer friends will melt away like summer snows, but winter friends are friends forever.
-George R.R. Martin
We all seek for friendship that is full of trust and that lasts forever, and being that kind of a friend, can be learnt from winter. If you associate yourself with someone don’t melt away when your purpose is complete rather be the person who stands by their friends in their thick and thin.
So, this winter let’s develop a character of true friendship within ourselves.
Hope
After every winter there is always spring, full of beauty, cheerfulness and renewed energy. Similarly, after every tough time there will be good time. Winter teaches us to find peace, like stillness in our surrounding during these times, with hope in heart that at the end everything is going to be alright.
So, this winter let’s find inner peace and understand that change is constant and good times are not that far.
